BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION:
Our group was founded since 1999 and recently was incorporated as a legal association nicknamed AGALEMO. It is formed by people with leukaemia and mieloma and also their relatives.
Our main goal is to give the newly diagnosed patients to quickly become acquainted with their diseases and to provide them with a group of people willing to support and help.
KEY INITIATIVES AND ACTIVITIES:
- To provide counseling about patient rights already granted by the health system in our country but sometimes overlooked by physicians too much concerned with cost issues.
- To provide the information about the diseases and the treatments.
- Recreational and other activities to help diagnosed people to cope with their disease.
NUMBER OF MEMBERS:
AGALEMO formal members are 30 but counting patients and relatives that come to our meetings and other people we know about that receive remote counselling this figure goes to 100.
The legal rights granted by the healthcare system is a model for other countries since it is a social security covering almost the whole population in Costa Rica, even immigrants. We are willing to send information about this system to any interested people.
